Tessa’s Summertime Favorites

One of Oregon’s best kept secrets is the gorgeous summer weather we get every year, but even the clear skies and perfect temps can’t compare with the laid-back, friendly attitudes of Oregonians. Lake Oswego is like a spectacular summer paradise with an endless supply of sunshine, ice cream and community-centric events. The community and small-town social structure in our affluent city are what make my clients fall in love with Lake Oswego. For those of us lifelong PNW residents, it is the first breath of summer air after another wet spring that reminds us why we stay—and it is the people who make us never want to leave.

As a native to the area, I have had many years to discover the very best summertime fun in Lake O and the surrounding communities. This year I have put together a little bucket list for the ultimate summer experience—from fun for the whole family to the perfect date night and everything in between.

Family

LAKE OSWEGO FARMER’S MARKET — It isn’t officially summer in Lake Oswego until the Farmer’s Market begins. With 80+ local vendors every week boasting delectable produce, artisan breads, household items and more, the market is sure to hold treasures you’ll love. There is also live music and a Kids’ Corner which makes this Saturday morning event fun for the whole family. Enjoy a lovely brunch at one of the many restaurants that are located in the downtown area, they have fabulous patio seating which is great for people watching.

THE LAKE — If you’ve got access to the lake, or know someone who does, you will never run out summer fun. From boating to paddle boarding, there are so many great ways to spend a day on the water. Not to mention the events hosted by the Lake Oswego Corporation throughout the summer such as the 4th of July Boat Parade, the Portland Water Spectacular Ski Show, Hot August Nights, and more. The lake, along with all of these fun events, provides the perfect opportunity to meet new people in the community. Hot August Nights is one of my absolute favorite things to do with my friends in the summer and I look forward to it every year (hope to see you there)!

COMMUNITY POOLS AND THE SWIM PARKS — Now, don’t feel left out if you don’t have access to the Lake. There are some great alternative swimming venues for the entire family to enjoy. The Greentree pool is where you will find me and my family enjoying the warm weather on a weeknight or weekend. As well, both the North and Southside of the Lake offer local residents access to the water through the two public swim parks. This is a great place for kids to be kids, I recommend you pack a picnic and let the kids frolic in the water freely.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK — Both Sounds of Summer and Moonlight & Music are summer concert series held in Lake Oswego parks from July to August. They are free to public and always so much fun for children and adults. Our kids love to hit the dance floor to show off the latest moves and my husband and I love the food and drinks. Grab you family or a group of friends and check out one of these fun outdoor concerts this summer.

SUMMER TREATS — One of my favorite things about summer is eating outside. I love walking around downtown LO and seeing everyone out on the restaurant patios, enjoying the atmosphere and the warm evening air. A delicious meal on the patio of Bamboo Sushi or Holy Taco wouldn’t be complete without dessert at our favorite local spot, Salt & Straw. For a healthier summer treat, I love Nekter, the new juice bar off of Kruse Way.

Adults

FARM DINNERS — The farm dinner craze has hit Portland with full force and for good reason! Who wouldn’t love to eat a fabulous meal cooked by a renowned chef, surrounded by gorgeous scenery and great friends (or interesting new people)? Whether you go with a group or just plan to chat up the folks sitting across the table, this is sure to be a summer event you’ll never forget. Check out an extensive list of farm dinners in the area or buy a ticket for dinner with Field & Vine, a highly recommended local company.

WINERIES — Living just north of Oregon wine country, there was no way that my favorite local wineries weren’t going to make this list. Wine tasting is like a weekend sport around here once the weather turns. There are plenty of excellent vineyards in the area with delicious wines, excellent service and spectacular views but a few of my favorites are Oswego Hills Vineyard & Winery, Stoller Family Estate and Lange Estate Winery and Vineyard. These local spots are perfect for a date or a girls outing.

Kids

SUMMER CAMPS — Lake Oswego Parks and Rec. puts on an amazing summer camp program full of activities for every child, not matter what their interests are. There are camps available for kids of all ages from 3-17. You can sign your children up for dance camps, tech camps, lego camps, sports camps, music camps, art camps and so many more! Your kids will love making new friends and memories at one of Lake Oswego’s amazing summer camps.

THE BEACH AT GEORGE ROGER’S PARK — If you don’t live on the lake or have easement access, you’ll want to check out the George Roger’s Park beach. The kids will love to swim the Willamette River and you will love taking them to the longest and sandiest beach on the south side of Portland. Families flock here in warm weather to play at the park and cool off in the water. This is the perfect place to meet other families in the area; you can connect with parents on the beach and your kids are sure to make fast friends here as well. Bring your beach towels and life jackets to spend a sunny day on the beach without going to Cali!
